Greetings
Starting a Conversation
Every conversation begins with a greeting. In English, the greeting you choose depends
on the time of day and who you are talking to. We use formal greetings for work,
teachers, or people we do not know well. We use informal greetings with friends and family.
Formal Greetings
Good morning
Use from 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
Good afternoon
Use from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
Good evening
Use from 5:00 PM onwards.
Informal Greetings
Hello
Standard greeting, safe for any situation.
Hi
Friendly and casual.
Hey
Very casual, use only with close friends.
Teacher's Tip
“Good night” is not a greeting. We only say “Good night” when we are saying goodbye
at night or going to sleep. When you arrive somewhere at night, say “Good evening”.

Polite Conversation
Asking and Answering
After saying hello, it is polite to ask the other person how they feel.
This shows you are interested in talking to them.
The Question
How are you?
This is the most common way to ask.
The Answer
I am fine, thank you. And you?
Always remember to ask them back.
03
Farewells
Ending the Conversation
When the conversation is over, you need a polite way to leave. Just like greetings,
you can use simple phrases to end the interaction on a positive note.
Common Farewells
Goodbye / Bye
Standard way to say farewell.
Have a great day
A polite and friendly wish for the other person.

Conversation Practice
Let's See It in Action
Read the following conversation between two new classmates. Notice how they use greetings,
ask about each other, and say goodbye.
Alex
Good morning! Hello, my name is Alex.
Maria
Hi Alex! I am Maria. How are you?
Alex
I am fine, thank you. And you?
Maria
I am doing great! Nice to meet you.
Alex
Nice to meet you too, Maria. I have to go to class. Goodbye!
Maria
Bye! Have a great day!
