Greetings and Farewells

Starting and Ending a Conversation

In English, we use different expressions depending on the time of day and the level of formality. Greetings are used when you arrive, and farewells are used when you leave.

Common Greetings

Hello / Hi Universal ways to say hello. “Hi” is more informal.
Good morning Used from sunrise until 12:00 PM.
Good afternoon Used from 12:00 PM until around 6:00 PM.

Common Farewells

Goodbye / Bye Standard ways to say goodbye.
Have a great day A polite and friendly way to end a conversation.
02

Introducing Yourself

Sharing Basic Details

When meeting someone for the first time, you usually share your basic information. The most common structure uses the verb to be.

Name

Polite Expressions

Nice to meet you. Say this after someone introduces themselves.
Nice to meet you too. Use this as a polite response.
03

Personal Questions

Requesting Personal Information

To learn about others, you need to ask specific questions. Notice how we use what, how, and where.

The Big 5 Questions

What is your name? Use this question to ask for someone’s identity.
Could you please spell it? Use this question to ask for the letters of a name.
How old are you? Use this question to ask for someone’s age.

More Personal Details

Where do you live? Use this question to ask for someone’s city or neighborhood.
What is your telephone number? Use this question to ask for contact information.
Teacher's Tip

In English, we say “I am twenty-one,” not “I have twenty-one.” Use the verb to be when talking about age.
